WESMEN PIZZA PLACE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Matt Opalko, men’s basketball - Matt, a first time winner of the player of the week helped the Wesmen to a 1-1 record this weekend. In Saturday’s game Matt had a solid game by scoring 14 points, including four big free throws at the end of the game to give the Wesmen a 78-74 victory over Calgary.
Aynsley Laluk, women’s volleyball- Aynsley played a big part in helping to lead the Wesmen to a weekend sweep of Simon Fraser. Aynsley, a fifth year starter averaged 13 kills and 11 digs in the weekend victories for the fifth ranked Wesmen.
GENERAL NEWS
The 2005 Radisson Hotel Winnipeg Downtown Women’s Basketball National Championships will take place at the Duckworth Centre from March 11 -13, 2005. Tournament passes are $30.00 and available at Duckworth Centre Customer Service Centre.
At the midway point of the season there have been some notable accomplishments by the athletes on all four teams, they are as follows:
MID SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:
Women’s Volleyball
-Andrea Charbonneau leads the C.I.S. with 4.82 points per game.
-Christa Desrochers leads Canada West with 10.5 assists per game.
Men’ Volleyball:
Ben Schellenberg is fourth in Canada West with 3.57 pts per game.
Men’s Basketball:
Erfan Nasajpour is fifth in C.I.S. scoring with 20.12 points per game. Erfan also leads Canada West in assists with 7.9 p.g. and steals with 3.2 p.g.
Women’s Basketball:
-JoAnne Wells leads Canada West in scoring with 21.4 ppg
-Rookie Jenny Ezirim leads Canada West with 2.5 steals per game
-Heather Thompson currently leads Canada West with 2.0 blocks per game and second in rebounds with 11 boards per game.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
It was a very successful weekend for the team as they ventured out to Simon Fraser to take on the Clan. The team returned home with a weekend sweep of the two matches. On Friday the Wesmen took the match 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-20). Aynsley Laluk led the Wesmen on this night with 11 kills and 12 digs and fellow fifth year player Andrea Charbonneau had 10 kills and 10 digs in the victory. On Saturday the team completed the sweep taking the match 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-12, 25-15). Fourth year player Kristin Brisebois was a force on this night collecting 15 kills and 8 digs in the match. The Wesmen are now sporting a 10 match-winning streak with a record of 10-2. The team will next see action on Jan 21 when they travel to Regina for a weekend series.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Coach Larry McKay and his squad did not see any game action this week. The team is practicing very hard in preparation for the second half of the season. The Wesmen will see action this Saturday as they travel to British Columbia for a weekend series against the Thunderbirds.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Wesmen women’s basketball team is a perfect 10. Coach Tanya McKay’s squad won both games this weekend to improve to 10-0 this season. On Friday night the Wesmen defeated Lethbridge 77-59. JoAnne Wells paced the Wesmen scoring 23 points while super rookie Jenny Ezirim collected 14 points. On Saturday night the Wesmen improved their record to 10-0 with a 69-55 victory over Calgary. The dynamic duo of JoAnne Wells and Uzo Asagwara led the Wesmen by scoring 24 and 20 points respectively. The Wesmen will face the Brandon Bobcats in a home and home series starting Thursday in Brandon before returning to the Duckworth Centre for Saturday’s game.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Wesmen men’s basketball team played some inspired ball this weekend and the end result was a split. On Friday the Wesmen started slow as they fell to Lethbridge 94-85. Guard Erfan Nasajpour and forward Dan Shynkaryk each had 22 points in the game to lead the Wesmen. On Saturday night the Wesmen came out strong in the first half building a ten-point halftime lead as they defeated Calgary 78-74. Erfan Nasajpour once again led the Wesmen on this night with 25 points. The Wesmen now sport a record of 2-8 and will head west to Brandon for a game on Thursday before the rubber match back at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night.
