WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Wesmen women’s team once again had a very successful week as they beat the Brandon Bobcats in both games played. On Thursday the team headed West to Brandon and they came away with a 81-49 victory over the Bobcats. JoAnne Wells led the Wesmen with 22 points. The Wesmen were so far ahead in the game it allowed Coach Tanya McKay a chance to give her starters a break and give the bench lots of quality minutes. On Saturday night the scene shifted to the Duckworth Centre but the results were the same. The Wesmen trounced Brandon 95-41. Once again the Wesmen had this game wrapped up at halftime and it allowed Coach Tanya McKay to give her bench some playing time. JoAnne Wells scored 20 points in only 19 minutes of play to pace the Wesmen. The two victories give the Wesmen a perfect 12-0 record in the Canada West Standings. The second ranked Wesmen will travel to the West Coast to take on the number one ranked Simon Fraser on Friday night in a game which should decide who the number one team in the country is and then take on Trinity Western Saturday night.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Once again the Wesmen men’s team came up with a split of their two games. On Thursday night the team was in Brandon to tackle the Bobcats. The team played hard but fell just short as they were defeated 74-70. Dan Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with 24 points. On Saturday the Wesmen needed a win and they got one on home court defeating the Bobcats 82-69. The team executed well both on offence and defense, which was a nice reminder of the team that captured the Wesmen Classic last month. Super guard Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with 32 points and also collected 11 rebounds. The victory gives the Wesmen a record of 3-9 and they are still in playoff contention in their division. The team will head West to British Columbia for a pair of games. On Friday the Wesmen will take on Simon Fraser and then battle Trinity Western on Saturday.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Coach Larry McKay and his team ventured out to Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds. The team played two solid matches but could only manage a series split. In Saturday’s match the Wesmen pulled out a 3-2 victory (25-19, 16-25, 24-26, 25-13, 15-9). The Wesmen were led by the duo of Jarrod Small and Ben Schellenberg. Small had 15 kills and Schellenberg had 11 kills in the victory. On Sunday it was a different story as the Wesmen played hard but were swept 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 32-30) by the Thunderbirds. Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen with 11 kills and Ryan Bevan had 8 digs in the match. The team now sports a record of 5-7 and will travel to Regina for a weekend series against the Cougars.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Coach Diane Scott and her team did not see any game action this past week. The team is currently sporting a 10-2 record which includes 10 victories in a row. The Wesmen women’s team will travel to Regina to take on the Cougars in a weekend series starting Friday night.
