WESMEN PIZZA PLACE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Erfan Nasajpour, men’s basketball - Erfan led the Wesmen to a two game sweep of the rival Manitoba Bisons. The second year guard averaged 33 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds in the two games. In Saturday’s game he scored 41 points including shooting 7-for 7 from three- point territory.
Kristin Brisebois, women’s volleyball - Kristin, a fourth year middle, played a very big part in helping the Wesmen sweep the Manitoba Bisons in two matches this past weekend. In the two matches Kristin had 21 kills, and was also strong on defense coming up with 19 digs.
GENERAL WESMEN NEWS
The Duckworth Challenge title is back where it belongs, right here at the University of Winnipeg. The U of W captured the 14th Annual Duckworth Challenge this past weekend by a score of 3-1 over the University of Manitoba Bisons. The volleyball matches were split on Friday night and the Wesmen won both basketball games at the University of Manitoba on Saturday night to capture the title. The Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game for volleyball were Alan Ahow and Aynsley Laluk and the Players of the Game for basketball were Erfan Nasajpour and JoAnne Wells.
March is right around the corner and The 2005 Radisson Hotel Winnipeg Downtown Women’s Basketball National Championships will take place at the Duckworth Centre from March 11- 13, 2005. Tournament passes are available for only $30.00 at the Duckworth Customer Service Centre.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Wesmen women’s volleyball team improved their regular season record to 14-2 with a pair of impressive victories over the Manitoba Bisons. In Friday’s match which was the opening of the Duckworth Challenge the Wesmen simply dominated from start to finish by defeating Manitoba 3-0 (25-14,25-14,25-19). Aynsley Laluk led the team with 16 kills and also came up with 11 digs. In Saturday’s rematch the Bisons put up a better fight but the Wesmen once again were too strong taking the match 3-0 (25-22,25-15,25-21). Once again the duo of Andrea Charbonneau and Aynsley Laluk led the team with 14 and 13 kills respectively. The weekend victories also extended the teams winning streak to 14 matches. Coach Diane Scott and her team will host the University of Alberta Pandas for a weekend series this Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Coach Larry McKay and his team were looking to put on a good show for their fans this weekend. Unfortunately they dropped both matches to the University of Manitoba Bisons. In Friday’s match the Wesmen won the first set in impressive fashion but dropped the next three to lose the match 3-1 (23-25,26-24,25-20,25-23). The Wesmen were led by Ryan Bevan with 12 kills and first year player Alan Ahow who had 11 kills and eight defensive digs. The Wesmen were looking to even the weekend series on Saturday but unfortunately the match was a repeat of the night before with the Wesmen dropping a 3-1 decision (21-25,25-20,25-22,25-22). Ben Schellenberg was a force for the Wesmen as he had 17 kills in the match. The two defeats drops the Wesmen’s record to 7-9 and they will face the Alberta Golden Bears who are ranked number one in a weekend series starting Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Wesmen Women’s basketball team played two key games against the University of Manitoba Bisons. On Thursday the Wesmen dropped a close 70-68 contest in front of 1400 spectators at the Duckworth Centre. JoAnne Wells played one of her best games of the season by scoring 33 points on 14-for-21 from the field. Jae Pirnie was a monster under the boards grabbing 14 rebounds. On Saturday the team traveled cross town to the University of Manitoba with one thing on their minds..REVENGE. The Wesmen disappointed a huge Manitoba crowd by defeating the Bisons 68-60. A flu-ridden JoAnne Wells and Uzo Asagwara each had 15 points to lead the team to victory. The Wesmen now sport a record of 14-2 and will head to Regina for a pair of games starting Friday evening.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Wesmen men’s basketball team improved their regular season record to 5-11 with a pair of impressive victories over the Manitoba Bisons. On Thursday the Wesmen played a solid game in defeating Manitoba 81-66 at the Duckworth Centre. Second year guard Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with 26 points and nine assists. On Saturday night the Wesmen went into the Bisons court looking for the sweep and they came away with an 86-70 victory. Super guard Erfan Nasajpour had the game of his life scoring 41 points including a perfect 7-for-7 from three-point territory. The pair of victories gives the Wesmen a record of 5-11 and more importantly moves them four points up on the Bisons for the last playoff spot in the Great Plains division. Coach Dave Crook and his squad will be on the road this weekend as they travel to Regina to take on the Cougars in a pair of games on Friday and Saturday.
