WESMEN PIZZA PLACE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Jarrod Small, men’s volleyball - Named a player of the week for the fifth time this season. Jarrod had a great weekend with 23 kills, 16 blocks in the two matches against the Alberta Golden Bears, who are the number one ranked team in the country.
JoAnne Wells, women’s basketball - A four-time winner of the player of the week award. JoAnne, who is the leading scorer in the C.I.S. averaged 30 pts, 13 rebounds and also connected on 20-of-22 free throw attempts in the Wesmen’s two games against the Regina Cougars.

The 2005 CIS Women’s Basketball Championships will be taking place from March 11-13 at the University of Winnipeg, Duckworth Centre. The 2004-2005 regular season is winding down for all Wesmen teams. After the coming weekend is the Canada West Playoffs where the road to CIS gold begins. The women’s basketball and volleyball teams have clinched a home playoff series. These games will be taking place on Fri. Feb .18 and Sat. Feb 19 , (Sun Feb. 20 if necessary) at the Duckworth Centre. The men’s volleyball team will know after this weekend if they will be hosting a playoff series or starting on the road. The men’s basketball team will be opening up their playoff schedule in Regina. WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Wesmen women’s volleyball team took on the number four ranked Alberta Pandas this past weekend. The Wesmen were in a battle in both matches and in the process came out of the weekend with a split. In Friday’s match the Wesmen beat the Pandas 3-1 (25-18,18-25,25-22,25-21). Aynsley Laluk who had 15 kills and Jocelyne Roy who pounded away 14 kills led the team. Fifth year player Andrea Charbonneau had a strong match coming up with 17 digs. On Saturday the Pandas snapped the Wesmen’s 15 match winning streak with a 3-2 victory (19-25,26-24,21-25,25-17,15-13). The powerful duo of Aynsley Laluk and Andrea Charbonneau led the Wesmen with 16 and 12 kills respectively. The game featured a special presentation honouring fifth year players Andrea Charbonneau and Aynsley Laluk, they were playing their final regular season home game at the Duckworth Centre. The team will take a 15-3 record into British Columbia for two matches to close out the regular season.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Coach Larry McKay and his team played some of their best volleyball of the season this past weekend. Unfortunately they dropped both matches to the number one ranked Alberta Golden Bears. On Friday the Wesmen were defeated 3-0 (25-17,28-26,26-24). Second year opposite Ben Schellenberg led the team with 14 kills and six digs. In Saturday’s rematch the Wesmen gave the Golden Bears all they could handle pushing them to five tough sets before falling 3-2(20-25,25-23,22-25,25-21,15-4). Ryan Bevan had a great match for the Wesmen leading the way with 16 kills and third year libero Marc De Spiegelaere came up with 13 digs. The Wesmen now sport a record of 7-11 and they will close out the regular season with a pair of matches in Saskatchewan on the weekend.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Wesmen women’s basketball team was in Regina this past weekend to battle the Regina Cougars. On Friday the team played a solid game coming away with 68-50 victory. JoAnne Wells led the Wesmen with 31 points on 12-for-18 shooting from the field. Third year guard Uzo Asagwara also had a strong game finishing with 18 points. On Saturday the Wesmen dropped a 74-72 overtime decision to the Cougars. Fifth year star JoAnne Wells had 29 points and 12 rebounds for the Wesmen. The weekend split now gives the Wesmen a 15-3 record and they will next see action at home this weekend with games against Victoria on Friday night and UBC on Saturday.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Head coach Dave Crook and his squad traveled to Regina for two games against the Regina Cougars. On Friday the team had a rough game, as they were defeated 86-68 by the Cougars. Erfan Nasajpour who was battling a cold and flu scored 13 points while Dan Shynkaryk had 12 points in the loss. On Saturday the Wesmen played better but they dropped an 82-73 decision to Regina. The Wesmen ran into a hot shooting Cougars team that connected on 54% of their shots from the field. Dan Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with 19 points and nine rebounds while fifth year player Tony Richter pitched in with 17 points and nine rebounds. The loss drops the team’s record to 5-13 and they will finish the regular season at home on the weekend with games against Victoria and UBC.
