WESMEN PIZZA PLACE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Ryan Roper, men’s basketball - A first time recipient of the player of the week. Ryan had his best game of the regular season on Saturday night scoring 21 points on 7-for-8 shooting including a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point territory to help the Wesmen to an 85-81 victory over UBC.

JoAnne Wells, women’s basketball - A five-time recipient of the player of the week. JoAnne, the current CIS scoring leader averaged 27 points and 10 rebounds in leading the Wesmen to a pair of victories against Victoria and UBC this past weekend.

GENERAL WESMEN NEWS
Wesmen fever is catching on. At this past Saturday’s basketball game vs UBC the Duckworth Centre was filled to capacity as over 2200 rowdy and loud fans cheered the Wesmen teams to victory.

Speaking of Wesmen fever, it is that time of the year for the Canada West Playoffs. The Duckworth Centre will be hosting two playoff series in two different sports this weekend. Please see below for the playoff schedule and ticket pricing :

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Wesmen women’s basketball team had two tough games to close out the regular season. On Friday the team battled the number four-ranked Victoria Vikes and the Wesmen came out on top with a hard fought 63-56 victory. JoAnne Wells led the Wesmen with 22 points and 12 rebounds and Uzo Asagwara had a strong game for the Wesmen scoring 16 points. The Wesmen got a lift in this game as fifth year player Heather Thompson made her return to the lineup after missing the last six games with a knee injury. On Saturday the Wesmen took on the UBC Thunderbirds who are ranked number three in the country. The team started slow but came away with an impressive 77-61 victory. JoAnne Wells led the team with 32 points and Uzo Asagwara poured in 23 points for the Wesmen. The game featured a special presentation honouring fifth year players JoAnne Wells and Heather Thompson, they were playing their final regular season home game at the Duckworth Centre. The team completed the regular season with an impressive 17-3 record and they will host the Victoria Vikes in the best of three opening round playoff series starting Friday night.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Head coach Dave Crook and his Wesmen team had two challenging games this weekend. On Friday the Wesmen got off to a slow start and fell 73-67 to the Victoria Vikes. Dan Shynkaryk led the Wesmen on this night scoring 18 points and grabbing nine rebounds. On Saturday the team took on the UBC Thunderbirds and played a solid game coming away with an 85-81 victory. Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with 27 points and nine assists. Ryan Roper also had a great game scoring 21 points on 7-for-8 shooting. The Wesmen honored fifth year player Tony Richter who was playing at the Duckworth Centre for the last time. The team finished the regular season with a 6-14 record and will next see action in the Canada West playoffs against Regina in Regina.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Wesmen women’s volleyball team traveled to Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds in a pair of weekend matches. On Friday the Wesmen were defeated 3-1(25-17,22-25,25-16,25-21).

Nicola Dirks had a strong match for the Wesmen with 13 kills and eight digs while Jocelyne Roy came up with 12 digs in the loss. In Saturday’s match the Wesmen once again were defeated 3-1(25-21,19-25,25-13,26-24). Aynsley Laluk led the Wesmen with 11 kills and nine digs while Jocelyne Roy had 10 kills and 11 defensive digs. The team closed out the regular season with a 15-5 record. The team will now prepare to host the opening round of the Canada West playoffs against Alberta starting Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Coach Larry McKay and his squad were in Saskatoon for a pair of weekend matches against the Saskatchewan Huskies. In Friday’s match the team played hard but lost the match 3-1(25-23,22-25,25-17,25-21). Jarrod Small who had 16 kills and seven blocks led the team. On Saturday the Wesmen were looking to rebound, but the Huskies were too strong coming away with a 3-0 win (25-21,25-15,26-24). Ben Schellenberg had a big match for the Wesmen coming up with 12 kills and nine digs. The team finishes the regular season with a 7-13 record and will prepare to open the playoffs against the tough Trinity Western University Spartans starting Thursday night in Langley, British Columbia.
