WESMEN PIZZA PLACE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Dan Shynkaryk, men's basketball - Dan was the Wesmen's best player in the Canada West Quarterfinal series vs Regina. In Friday's game Dan scored a team high 18 points. In game two on Saturday Dan poured in 32 points on 12-for-19 shooting and also pulled down 12 rebounds.
Jocelyne Roy, women's volleyball - Jocelyne was outstanding in the Canada West Quarterfinal series vs Alberta. Jocelyne, a fourth year left-side player averaged 16 kills and 20 digs in the three match series. Jocelyne will be a key factor for the Wesmen as they travel to Calgary for the Canada West Final Four this weekend.
GENERAL WESMEN NEWS
The Winnipeg Wesmen will be holding a "GARAGE" SALE on Wed. Feb. 23 from noon-2: 00 p.m. (2nd floor lounge). Items for sale will include vintage Wesmen uniforms, equipment, overstocked clothing, souvenirs,antiques and one-of-a-kind items. Proceeds to the Wesmen Athletic Scholarship Fund.
The 2005 CIS Women's Basketball Championships are less than three weeks away. The Duckworth Centre will be hosting the event from March 11- 13. Tournament passes are now available for only $30.00 and may be purchased at Duckworth Customer Service Centre.
The 2005 Wesmen Summer Sports Camps will once again be taking place at the Duckworth Centre in July and August. Please log onto www.wesmen.ca for all the camp information and also to register on-line. For further information please call 786-9418.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
The Wesmen women's volleyball team took on the Alberta Pandas in the best of three Canada West Quarterfinals. In match one on Friday the Wesmen put up a good fight but were defeated 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 31-29, 25-21). Jocelyne Roy led the Wesmen with 15 kills and 19 digs. On Saturday the Wesmen evened the series with a dramatic 3-2 victory (20-25, 25-23, 26-24, 23-25, 15-10). Jocelyne Roy was solid on this match with 17 kills and 25 digs. Fifth year player Andrea Charbonneau had 18 kills in the victory. On Sunday it was the deciding match of the series. The Wesmen put up a great fight but were defeated 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 16-14). Andrea Charbonneau had a great match pounding away 21 kills and adding five blocks. Despite the loss the Wesmen qualify for the Canada West Final Four which will see them battle the number one ranked Calgary Dinos in the semi-finals on Friday night in Calgary.
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
The Wesmen were in Langley B.C. battling the tough Trinity Western University Spartans in their Canada West Quarterfinal series. On Thursday the Wesmen were overpowered by the Spartans as they were defeated 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-19). Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen with 12 kills. On Friday the Wesmen needed a win to even the series but despite a better effort the Spartans defeated the Wesmen 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 29-27, 25-9). Ben Schellenberg had 14 kills and 9 digs, while Martin Rochon added 13 kills for the Wesmen. The series loss ends the Wesmen season and Coach Larry McKay will be working to get ready for next year.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team hosted the Victoria Vikes in the best of three Canada West Quarterfinals. In game one on Friday the Wesmen fell behind by 15 points at halftime and played hard to make it close, but the Vikes took game one 70-64. Uzo Asagwara led the Wesmen with 25 points. On Saturday it was game two and the Wesmen defeated the Vikes 58-53. It was a close game all the way but JoAnne Wells sealed the victory with a clutch basket with 28 seconds left in the game. JoAnne as the top Wesmen scorer with 16 points. On Sunday it was the third and deciding game of the series and the Vikes defeated the Wesmen 63-58 to win the series 2-1. JoAnne Wells led the Wesmen with 20 points while Heather Thompson had one of her best games of the season by scoring 18 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. The Wesmen will now get ready to participate in the CIS Women's Basketball Championships in March as they gain an automatic berth for being the host city.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Head Coach Dave Crook and his squad traveled to Regina for their best of three Canada West Quarterfinal series against the Regina Cougars. In Friday's game one the Wesmen were rocked 109-66 by the Cougars. Dan Shynkaryk had 18 points to lead the Wesmen and Ryan Roper scored 14 points in the loss. On Saturday the Wesmen put in a better effort but were defeated 91-75 by the Cougars who won the series 2-0. Dan Shynkaryk has his best game of the season scoring 32 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. The loss ends the Wesmen season and Dave Crook will evaluate the season and get prepared for an exciting 2005-2006 season.
