The Wesmen completed a four games in four days undefeated romp through the Maritimes with a 75-58 win over Dalhousie University in Halifax on Sunday. The victory follows a convincing 86-59 win over UPEI, an 81-52 pounding of St. FX, and a 79-55 spanking of Acadia. The Wesmen end their pre-season schedule with a perfect 10-0 record. During Thursday’s win over UPEI, the Wesmen overwhelmed the Panthers shooting 53% from the field. Winnipeg’s Wells sisters, back home on the East coast led the Wesmen with JoAnne’s 18 and Janet’s 15 points. On Friday the Wesmen took it to St. FX, with Heidi Schwartz knocking down 19 points, propelling Winnipeg to victory. Saturday Schwartz was again high scorer with 18, while guard Sally Kaznica dished out 13 assists in sending Acadia to defeat. Finally on Sunday, JoAnne Wells had 20 points in another dominant win, this time over Dalhousie. Women’s Volleyball The Wesmen’s 3-0 straight set win on Saturday night salvaged their Canada West weekend series with Simon Fraser University. A tight Winnipeg team fell in five sets on Friday night and Wesmen coach Diane Scott was not pleased with her No. 5 ranked squad, as poor defensive play buoyed an energetic SFU side who had yet to taste victory in Canada West play. On Saturday the much more focussed Wesmen took control early and overwhelmed the Clan en route to the match win. Men’s Basketball The Wesmen ran into some stiff competition at the Brock University Invitational Tournament on the weekend. On Friday night Winnipeg shot only 31% from the field while falling to McMaster 75-58. The Wesmen turned in a much better performance on Saturday narrowly losing the home team Brock Badgers, 97-92. Winnipeg’s backcourt again led the way for the Wesmen with Aldin Smalling scoring a tournament high 36 points and Erfan Nasajpour chipping in 22. Smalling picked up an All-star selection after averaging 27.5 points during the weekend action. Men’s Volleyball The Wesmen had the weekend off. |
