Thursday November 14th is “Shoe Give-Away Night” at the Duckworth Centre. During half time of the final game against cross-town rival the Manitoba Bisons, one lucky ticket will be drawn for 12 pairs of shoes, compliments of Converse and the University of Winnipeg. That’s enough to outfit your whole team! Each team member in attendance can fill out an entry form at the admission booth on the 2nd floor of the Duckworth Centre. Free admission is available by advance registration only. To arrange for tickets call Women’s Basketball Coach Tanya McKay at 786-9329 or Men’s Basketball Coach Dave Crook at 786-9210.
Last Saturday night members of the Varsity View Community Club were cheering more than the Wesmen win over the Huskies. A team member’s name was drawn at “Uniform Give-Away Night” landing her squad a brand new set of uniforms compliments of Saxon Athletics, Winnipeg Outfitters and the University of Winnipeg.
A reminder that tickets for the University of Winnipeg’s Dare to Dream – Celebrating Women in Sport breakfast are still available at the Duckworth Centre. December 3rd is the date, and the proceeds from the fundraising event go to the Women’s Basketball and Volleyball Athletic Scholarship Fund.

The Wesmen took two five set matches the hard way from the No. 4 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies in hard fought and exciting Canada West volleyball action on the weekend. On Friday night the Wesmen jumped out to a 2-0 set lead, only to see Saskatchewan claw their way back into the match by winning then next two sets. Some great digs by 4th year libero Shawn Scarcello shifted the momentum back to the Winnipeg side as they reeled off the final 7 points in the 5th set to win 15-7. On Saturday night the Wesmen again allowed the Huskies to tie things up at 2 sets apiece before turning things around in the 5th set for their second match victory and a weekend sweep. Coach Larry McKay was happy with the win but downplayed the significance of his No. 8 ranked Wesmen sweeping No. 4 Saskatchewan.
“Taking two off of anybody is a big deal for us, but we have to try and carry the momentum into this weekend against Regina – and take care of business then,” said McKay whose team has now evened its Canada West record at 2-2. 5th year setter Ryan Henley had an outstanding weekend for the Wesmen with 89 assists. 2nd year outside hitter Dave Bishop led the Winnipeg attack with 35 kills in the two matches.
This Week:
The Wesmen hope to build on their modest winning streak when they entertain the University of Regina Cougars at the Duckworth Centre on Friday and Saturday.

After a bit of a scare from the unranked Trinity Western Spartans on Friday night, the No. 1 ranked Wesmen returned to form and beat the Spartans handily on Saturday. Coach Tanya McKay felt her team was a little tight and “didn’t have any legs” on Friday, but Trinity Western’s Heidi DeHaan’s 29 points weren’t enough for the Spartans as a late basket with under 20 seconds to play by 5th year Winnipeg post Angela Willerton sealed the deal in a 68-64 Wesmen victory. Saturday night was a different story as the Wesmen went on a 15-6 run in the second half to put them up 71-51 and then cruised to an 83-61 win. 3rd year guard JoAnne Wells led Winnipeg in scoring averaging 18 points in the two games. 4th year guard Sally Kaznica’s turned in a solid performance averaging 12 points, 8 assists and 5 steals over the weekend.
This Week:
The Wesmen have a home and home series with cross-town rivals the Manitoba Bisons. Thursday the Duckworth Centre is the venue and then the teams square off again on Saturday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Last Week:
The Wesmen dropped a pair of games to a tough Trinity Western squad on the weekend to open their Canada West Conference schedule at 0-2.
"They're a very good basketball team, they played well and are very tough at home," said Wesmen Coach Dave Crook. Friday night Winnipeg ran into a revved up Spartan team, losing 87-72. 2nd year Wesmen guard Aldin Smalling had 17 points in a losing cause. On Saturday it was more of the same as a balanced Trinity Western attack proved too much for the Wesmen as they fell 90-67. Smalling once again led the Wesmen with 21 points, and 3rd year forward Dave Brar, in his first start of the season, added 15 points in a solid performance. Crook feels his team needs to get better away from the Duckworth Centre.
"We're not playing well on the road - we don't have as much energy as we do at home."
This Week:
The Wesmen have a crucial home and home series with inter-city rivals the Manitoba Bisons, with both teams looking for their first Canada West conference win of the season.
"We haven't won in a couple of weeks and we haven't played well, a couple of wins would certainly raise our spirits," said Crook.

Last Week:
The Wesmen couldn’t match an “aggressive, efficient and flawless” University of Alberta Panda team on the weekend. No. 5 Winnipeg went down to defeat in straight sets both Friday and Saturday night.
&We didn’t have enough game in us this weekend,” said Wesmen Coach Diane Scott. 3rd year hitters Andrea Charbonneau and Aynsley Laluk led the Wesmen with 13 and 12 kills respectively in a more competitive match on Friday night. On Saturday night, a focussed Panda team handled the Wesmen easily. In that match 1st year setter Christa Desrochers saw her first official CIS action and Scott thought she showed some poise on the court.
&Christa helped ignite the comeback from 16-6 in the first set to give us a respectable 25-20 finish.”
This Week:
The Wesmen hope to get things back on track this weekend when they play host to the University of Regina Cougars in Canada West regular season play at the Duckworth Centre.
